Sailing in Long Beach, California and the State’s Coastal Waters

Some of southern California’s most popular harbors can be boating’s equivalent to Disneyland, as there are a plethora of spots to visit and dock. But none more so than Long Beach, where a fleet of sailboats, sailing instructions, and sailing clubs are dotting this scenic coastal landscape. As legendary singer/songwriter, Christopher Cross, once sang in the 1980s “Sailing takes me away to where I’ve always heard it could be. Just a dream and the wind to carry me. And soon I will be free.”

Folks who sail in and around Long Beach, California feel this exact same way. From the moment you leave the marina, it’s time to enjoy the fresh breezes and warm sun, as the coast provides smooth sailing waters during the pristine autumn and winter times of the year. Allow your sailing skills and learned techniques to be challenged in the summer and spring months, as the coastal waters tend to get churned up by Mother Nature.

The United States Sailing Center in Long Beach was once envisioned solely as a training site to help sailors fulfill their Olympic dreams. Now, the Sailing Center has developed into a true oasis of training for sailors of every ability and from all parts of the Long Beach community. From developmental clinics and the hosting of world-class regattas to coaching a number of area high schools and the USC collegiate sailing team, the United States Sailing Center offers sailors from all walks of life, the skills necessary for success in this beautiful sport.

The Center is located on the Alamitos Bay Peninsula in Long Beach and hosts some of the most advanced training anywhere on the West coast. Every program caters to activities that help local groups, disabled sailing opportunities, and learn-to-sail classes for all ages and abilities. The United States Sailing Center is certainly leaving its mark in the sailing world, and Long Beach in general.

If ever there was a time to cruise the waters of Southern California, it is now. The Pacific Coast is one of the most epic coastlines, with harbors from Long Beach to Catalina, and some points along the way that give sailors plenty of entertainment and a potential glimpse of spots featured in signature movies. But remember “red skies at night, sailor’s delight. Red skies in the morning, sailor’s take warning.”

There’s nothing quite as enjoyable as California Coastal cruising in a sailboat.
